San Francisco Travel Guide

San Francisco is one of the most popular cities in the United States. Founded in the year 1976, it is the fourth largest city in California. The City of San Francisco has more than 7.3 million people with multi ethnic and diverse population. San Francisco is situated at the top of Peninsula, with San Francisco Bay on its eastern side, Pacific Ocean on its west and the Golden Gate on the north. It is one of the hottest international tourist destinations with many popular and well known landmarks such as the China Town, Alcatraz Island, Coit Tower, Cable Cars and the Golden Gate Bridge. Ever year it draws large number of tourists from worldwide and the tourism industry has been flourishing at a rapid speed.

The archaeological evidences reveal that at around 3000BC the land of San Francisco was inhabited by the Yelamu tribe of the Ohlone people who lived in many small villages. The land was then taken over by the Spanish exploration party in 1769. The San Francisco earth quake on 18th April, 1906 at 5.11am is a major history of the city. It caused widespread destructions with houses and buildings all across the city destroyed. It took the life of almost three quarter of the city and rendered almost 400,000 people homeless.

The San Francisco city has the typical Mediterranean climate of the California with dry summer spell and wet winters. In spite of being surrounded by the water bodies on three sides, the climate in the city is influenced strongly by the cold currents of the Pacific Ocean which has a moderating influence on the climate and thereby produces mild climate with only a slight seasonal temperature variations.

The city of San Francisco has seen snowfall very rarely with only ten such incidents been recorded so far. During early summer and spring, the western portion of the city is mostly covered by fog caused by the combination of the cold ocean water and the city’s high heat.

The city of San Francisco has beautiful beach which runs along the shoreline of the Pacific Ocean. The water is not suitable for swimming because of the deadly water currents. The city is well known for its culture and heritage and has amazing performing and entertaining art museums and centers. The public transportation in the city is excellent. But many people in the city prefer cycling for commuting to work.
